阿图罗是个出生在西西里的平凡少年，却将自己的身世与黑手党联系在了一起，说成是上天安排要他成为意大利黑手党横行岁月的见证者。小学的化装舞会上，其他同学都化身为童话人物，他扮的却是他的偶像，当时的总理大臣；热爱政治的他，总有缘与正直反黑的官员与法官相遇，他们却都一一为黑手党暗杀。而他的梦中情人弗洛拉，则成为了他另一个难以释怀的情愫，长大后的他，能否实现自己的梦想。导演用夸张的喜剧形式，表现了黑手党鼎盛时期最普通意大利人民的生活是如何被影响，社会是如何被腐蚀，而意大利人民又是怎样战胜这一切。斑驳的旧影像与虚构的影片相结合，还原给观众最纯正的意大利和最真实的黑手党。
