Ako dlho je možné udržať v tajnosti, že máte psa? Dlho nie, čo si súrodenci Andi a Bruce veľmi dobre uvedomujú. Problém je o to aktuálnejší, že sa títo siroty dostali do pazúrov pestúnov, ktorí zvieratá priamo nenávidia. Predvolená situácia pre filmovú adaptáciu slávnej rovnomennej knižky nemohla byť vyhrotená. Každodenné ilegálne uspokojovanie základných potrieb ich chlpatého priateľa Piatka vystrieda oveľa ambicióznejší plán, na ktorého začiatku stojí objav spustošeného bývalého hotela. Andi a Bruce naňho náhodou narazia na úteku pred policajtmi a vo vnútri objavia dvoch Piatkových túlavých súkmeňovcov. Vtedy sa v ich hlavách zrodí šialený nápad poskytnúť azyl všetkým opusteným psom z blízkeho i širokého okolia.
